The international B2B music industry market (Midem) is currently in its 53rd edition in Cannes. Thousands of participants from all over the world are discussing the opportunities in the sector. And the African continent is at the heart of all the attention.
Indeed, after the “Midem African forum”, things are going to go further, because why discuss the African music industry outside the African context? Thus, an edition of Midem is announced on the continent in 2020, to support and accompany African creativity. A first that comes as a moderate surprise. In April 2019, a Midem team went on an African tour (Dakar, Douala, Lagos) to discuss with various players in the music chain the new challenges of the sector and the interest aroused by African music.
For the moment, the country chosen to host the first “Midem Africa” is not yet known, even if Kenya is often mentioned. But discussions are underway with an East African country, a West African country and a South African country. At least that is what Alexandre Deniot, the director of Midem, said.
In the meantime, the players in the African music industry met on 5 June in Cannes, as part of the “Midem African forum”. A meeting that will allow them to redefine the industry’s structures on the continent.
