What would major football competitions be without the anthems dedicated to them? The question may not arise. In any case, the tradition will be respected this year, on the occasion of the 32nd edition of the African Cup of Nations for Men, which takes place in Egypt from 21 June.

The Togolese group Toofan has been chosen to set the tone for the competition. It is indeed the duo that proposed the anthem of the CAN 2019. Entitled “Panenka”, the song was presented on 20 May during the programme “Talents d’Afrique” broadcast on Canal+. A mix of Afrobeat and dancehall, it will be used as a pre-match theme song and as a dressing for decoding programmes during the competition.

Panenka” is a term used in football jargon to describe a particular technique for taking a penalty or goal kick. Instead of hitting the ball hard, the player hits a flick of the wrist aimed at the centre of the goal, usually just below the crossbar, to trap the opposing goalkeeper. It was invented by Antonín Panenka, born on 2 December 1948 in Prague. Even today, his style is used by the world’s greatest players and inspired the title of the Togolese duo “Toofan”. The group adds that the composition was inspired by the pre- and post-match atmosphere in the lyrics.

Initially scheduled to take place in Cameroon, the 2019 CAN will finally be played in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July 2019.
