Show promotion is a job, not a hobby…

Dj Kerozen in concert in Douala. The information has not escaped the attention of music lovers who repeat the refrains of the Ivorian singer all day long. The event was seen as a must for the evening of April 12, thanks to the spots that were broadcast here and there, especially on social networks.

Except that things did not go as planned. In other words, there was no concert. However, all confirmations about the show were made up to the day before. Dj Kerozen received part of his fee, arrived in Cameroon, was put up in a hotel and was simply waiting for the show.

Except that, a few hours before his show, there was nothing. The producer of the show said he was duped by the company in charge of the stage management. The producer of the show said that he was duped by the company in charge of the control room, which answered his phone calls, swearing that it was on its way to install the equipment, but never arrived. Kerozen apologised to his fans and did not demand payment of the rest of his fee.

The artist was also rather understanding towards the producer of his aborted show, whom he presented as a young man. His company, Genesis events, issued a statement apologising for the turn of events and promised to refund fans who had bought tickets for the fantasy show. Except that the details of this procedure have never been communicated and fans continue to wait…

Did you say shame? The word is weak. But this other failure in the organisation of shows in Cameroon reassures us that the profession of show promoter has a bright future ahead of it. It is not in danger of being replaced by computers or by the wonders (depending on your point of view) of artificial intelligence. In this business, amateurism pays dearly. And those who think it’s all about money are kidding themselves. You have to master the circuits, know the links in the chain, find the best people in the various trades of the show, etc.

This is a good lesson that recalls the memory of the flop of the Kassav’ concert in Cameroon in 2017. It was over before it started. The shame…
